Professional Development Workshops for English Language Teachers

  • Over 30 years training experience

  • English countryside immersion setting

  • Mix of language topics - including: humour, nuance

  • Variety of teaching topics- technology, literature

  • Whole-day Field trip

Fleetham Lodge English offers a programme that is second to none in fine-tuning your teaching skills, sharing expertise and exploring new and exciting ideas for the EFL classroom.

We work together on improving EFL teaching skills by working intensively together as a group so we can learn from each other's experiences and training. Sessions are led by an experienced teacher-trainer, but this is experiential training.

At the end of the workshop you will go away not only with new skills and ideas but also knowing where to find more support and information that will continue to move you forwards in your teaching career, from whatever level you are.

Everyone will be involved and everyone will have a great time!

Throughout the year we offer:

  • 3 week-long workshops
  • 3-day weekend programmes
  • one-day workshops

Week-long and weekend programmes are residential and limited to 4 participants

One-Day workshops are limited to 15 participants

Please email for more information

But don't just take our word for it - here are some of the reflections from previous participants on the workshops

The Workshops

5 hours of topics for discussion per day (Mon through Fri) split into two sessions

  • The morning session will cover grammar and skills work
  • The afternoon session will cover methodology, latest developments, good practice and other ELT-related teaching issues

All sessions are interactive and collaborative.

One day is spent on a cultural/literature-related excursion: This year we are looking at the Brontes. The day includes a visit to Howarth - the former home of the Brontes and now housing the Bronte Museum. If the day is fine we can walk out over the moors to get a feel for the background of their books.

In the evenings we watch movies of the books so we can discuss these and also look at how we can use literature in the classroom.

There are opportunities to walk and cycle if the weather permits this. We have bikes and also a tennis court which you can use in good weather.

Areas of interest are:

We address many of these in our workshops and some of the more specialist areas in the one-day training days.

  • Teaching advanced adult students
  • High level grammar and skills
  • E-learning
  • Using technology in the EFL classroom
  • Language for work
  • Effective Course Design
  • Using literature in Language teaching
  • Classroom dynamics
  • IELTS Higher Bands
  • IELTS Writing Band 7/8

Other topics are also explored and we welcome your suggestions.

Each workshop accepts up to 4 participants. Full-board accommodation at Fleetham Lodge is included.

Accommodation

We have accommodation for all participants in the house. The rooms are large and spacious and there are three bathrooms exclusively for participant use.

Being based in the countryside we are able to source a lot of good produce locally (including eggs from our own hens and (in season) fruit and vegetables from our garden)

Transfers from Northallerton, our local train station are also available on the afternoon of arrival and departure (direct trains from London, Manchester and Edinburgh)
